Gimp Image Tutorials | Submited Jul 2, 2008
Hey all! I'm going to show you how to create an animation using GIMP. Of course this is going to be a simple run through of everything. For all of the beginners in GIMP, don't worry. I'll be writing a beginners guide to GIMP soon.
Hot Keys
As I was writing this I realized that someone might not know the hot keys, and trust me, they're life-savers!
Ctrl Z = Undo
Ctrl A = Select All
Scroll Up = Zoom In (On Zoom mode)
Scroll Down = Zoom Out (On Zoom mode)
Shift and drag = When you have clicked on a certain part of the image, you can hold the shift key, and drag it to create a straight line.
Getting Started
I'm going to make this really easy for you. Just open up a new image. I'm going to be doing a 100x100 image. Create whatever image you want to work with. I will be making a text icon. Nothing too extravagant.

That's my base image. I've decided that I want the text to kind of write itself. Right click on the image, and click "Copy Visible" make another layer, and paste that image on it. Make sure that you don't lose your base image. It is incredibly frustrating.
The first thing I'm going to do on the new layer, is paste the image that I had created, and use the paintbrush tool to get rid of the text. Make sure that you're not doing this to your base image! You're only doing this to the new layer.
Now I have something that looks like this

In case anyone was wondering... Yes, I run Linux, and yes, it is a dual monitor set up.
The longer you want the image to stick the more layers you're going to have to make. I generally make three layers/frames for each, however, I'm not going to that considering this particular gif has me over fifty frames.
Now That I'm Done With My Image, I Want To Make It An Animation. What's Next?
Now that you're done, and you have the desired amount of frames/layers, look at the top of your image.
- You'll see Filters. It's the last option on the right.
- Click on filters and go down the list until you see "Animation"
There are a bunch of things to play with there, but don't click on any of them if you have more than one layer.
- Click on playback. You'll be able to see what your gif looks like.
- If you're completely satisfied with the gif that you just created, save it as "FILENAME.gif"
After you've done this a window that looks like the image below will pop up.

Make sure that you click on "Save As Animation".
Now you should have something that looks like this

I hope you found this helpful, and I hope that you get good use out of it!

To create a GIF that looks like the one that I just did, create the initial image, and copy the layer that you want to be changing. (Make sure that the layer is highlighted.)
Click on "Copy Visible" for the BG image or the background, and click on "Paste As New Image". Continue adding the layer with the text, but erase the parts that you don't want to show at that particular point. Eventually you'll get to the point where you don't have to erase anything at all.
